What Is a Knitted Wire Mesh Gasket?

A knitted wire mesh gasket is a flexible, conductive EMI sealing component constructed from interlocked metal wires such as Monel, stainless steel (304/316), or nickel-plated copper. It provides broadband EMI shielding across 10 MHz to 40 GHz, with typical contact resistance under 0.01Ω and compression recovery >80% (per ASTM F1574).
For harsh environments, advanced dual-layer versions incorporate silicone or fluorosilicone elastomer cores, enabling IP68 environmental sealing while maintaining shielding effectiveness >100 dB, compliant with MIL-DTL-83528C. Operational temperature ranges from -200°C to +650°C (metal-only designs).

What Are Knitted Wire Mesh Gaskets Used For?

These gaskets are essential in industries requiring simultaneous EMI shielding and mechanical sealing. Aerospace applications include sealing satellite payload compartments against RF leakage (per ECSS-Q-ST-70-02) and grounding aircraft avionics bays under DO-160G HIRF requirements. Telecom infrastructure uses them to shield 5G mmWave antenna enclosures from cross-talk (ETSI EN 303 413). Electric vehicle manufacturers integrate them into battery housings to suppress conducted emissions (CISPR 25) while preventing dust ingress. Nuclear facilities deploy radiation-resistant Inconel 600 mesh gaskets to seal reactor control rod housings, withstanding neutron flux >10¹³ n/cm². Medical imaging systems, such as CT scanners, rely on them to isolate high-frequency noise under IEC 60601-1-2.

Types of Knitted Wire Mesh Gaskets

Knitted wire mesh gaskets are differentiated by material composition and application-specific enhancements. High-Shielding Monel Gaskets excel in marine environments, offering saltwater corrosion resistance and 120dB shielding at 1–10GHz (MIL-STD-461G). High-Temperature Alloy Variants, such as Inconel 718, maintain elasticity at 700°C for turbine engine sensor sealing (AMS 5598). Hybrid Elastomer-Mesh Designs combine stainless steel knitting with silicone cores for vibration damping in automotive ADAS radar modules (ISO 16750-3). Custom-Profile Gaskets include D-shaped cross-sections for waveguide flange sealing and hollow-core tubular designs for EMI-protected fluid transfer lines. Low-Force Contact Gaskets use fine 0.05mm diameter gold-plated wires to ground fragile PCB components without deformation. Emerging innovations include graphene-infused mesh for THz-frequency shielding and 3D-printed topology-optimized gaskets reducing weight by 40% while maintaining RF performance.
